"We met in 2004, during the first week of our junior high school life. I was the MC of a school show, and he was the magician in one of the performances. He thought I was the ugliest MC possible in the world. I thought he was so annoyingly talkative. Lol."
"We formed a band together in 2006 to perform on the Children's Day. Cindy and I were in different classes; honestly there was no reason why we should perform together. It was obviously my scheme, but she didn't point me out either haha. We were super proud of our Oxygen Band; it's not something junior high kids normally do in China. We made it together."
"Our Band really drew us close. We became best friends to each other soon. We rejected to admit there was anything more than friendship between us, but we knew we were special to each other. But seriously, who would call a 'normal friend' for 4 hours multiple times a month...? No matter what, we started off our relationship as best friends. That's why we have such a solid foundation of love today."
"I was shocked when he told me that he decided to go to Singapore for high school. As heart-broken as I was, I decided to support his dream. I did everything I could to help him prepare for the tests and interviews. Unsurprisingly he got admitted to VJC. On Nov 2, 2007, he took off for Singapore. 1 minute before he turned off his phone, I received a text message from him: 'Bye, I love you.' Was that even a legit DTR confession?"
"I called her on Nov 4, 2007, when I got my new phone in Singapore. She asked me whether that was a serious confession. I hesitated to answer. I knew she didn't plan to date anyone before college. I didn't know what I was thinking but I answered yes. She told me that she wanted to be like her parents, who married their first love. She asked me whether I could promise to date her for marriage. That was a brave question! Once again, I didn't know what I was thinking, but I said yes again. That was the beginning of our 10-year-long love story."
"The first 5 years of our relationship were long-distance. It wasn't easy. I lived in a boarding school in China, so I couldn't call whenever I wanted to. We didn't have Wechat or anything like that either. We met twice a year during Peter's summer and winter breaks. It was definitely not easy. That's why when he finally got admitted to the same college UC Berkeley as I did, we were thrilled. I knew it was God who kept us on track. No human could make things work so perfectly like this."
"2 years of college time together flew by fast. Cindy graduated from Berkeley in 2014, and she went back to Shanghai for her first job at Bain. It was not our first time doing long distance, but this time things were particularly difficult because with our busy schedule, we almost have no daytime overlap to call each other. That's when we decided that we needed to figure something out to come back together. Cindy courageously applied for MBA at such a young age. With lots of blessing, she got into Wharton. It seemed that we were approaching the end of our long-distance journey."
"Nanjing-Singapore. Singapore-Berkeley. Berkeley-Shanghai. Sunnyvale-Philadelphia. We tried so many combinations of long distance destinations. As Peter started his career at Apple and I am about to graduate from Penn, we were ready for our next chapter together. On Jul 1, 2017, he surprised me with a beautiful proposal in Washington D.C. where I was doing my summer internship, with lots of friends flying in from different parts of the world. I recalled my first kiddish questions to him on Nov 4 2007, 'can you to promise to date for marriage', and looked back on the 10-year journey we shared. Of course, I said yes."
